Part I

Anchor 3

Part one of Kafka's The Metamorphosis begins with the story's protagonist/main character waking up to discover that he has transformed into a vermin. Although he was initially concerned about his condition, he becomes more fixated towards the fact that he is late for work, and he panics while deciding what course of action he should take. It is revealed through the third person commentary of Gregor's thoughts that Gregor dislikes his job, due to his long, fast-paced hours and his boss's constant negative feedback, and that his family is relying on him to accumulate enough money to pay off their debt. As his parents become concerned about Gregor's oversleeping, an employee from Gregor's job shows up to check on Gregor and to get him to work as soon as possible. The employee pushes/convinces Gregor to come out of his room by stating that his position at work isn't very secure. After many efforts to get up, Gregor barely manages to open up the door with his jaw, only to reveal his new 'form' to his now appalled co-worker and family.

Part II

Part two of Kafka's story, The Metamorphosis, starts off with Gregor being suddenly woken up, after a long sleep, by movement caused by his sister leaving him in his room. After he doesn't eat his milk and bread, his sister comes to the room and places rotten food in the floor and to her surprise he consumes the trash. This continue for a while and after some time, Gregor begins to find climbing on the wall fun. In response his mother and sister made the decision to move all of the furniture out of his room to allow him to move about easily. However, Gregor, not wanting to lose his stuff, leaves his room to cover up a painting he doesn't want them to take. As a result, his mother ends up injured just as his father arrives. Despite having an angry tone for the most part, Gregor's father also has a somewhat pleased tone to his voice, according to Gregor as his father proceeds to chase him throughout the house. The part ends with Gregor's father seriously injuring Gregor with an apple and his mother having to beg his father to spare him.

Part III

At the beginning of Part III of Kafka's story, quite some time has passed since part II, as his sister is forced to get a job and his mother is also forced to work as well. To receive his savings, Mr. Samsa pulls out his safe only to reveal that he had been saving up Gregor's income the whole time, making the debt aspect of the story quite questionable. As the part goes on, Grete comes to resent having to take care of Gregor as she enters adulthood. She also comes to resent her family, as it's suggested when Greegor states that they no longer have long or lively conversations at dinner. Eventually she stops taking care of Gregor to pursue her own interests. Gregor then realizes that no one will help him and that none of his 'family' members will aid him in his mysterious illness.
